Firefly - Mal Reynolds

The past, fantasy, and time-travel aren't the only places where Victorian trousers can be seen; as best we can tell, they'll survive in some form or another for hundreds of years into the future!

As an obvious example, the characters in Star Trek might visit the holodeck to role-play their favorite stories and/or in their favorite periods, dressing accordingly:

Still, though, those characters were dressing up in period costumes for fun.

Perhaps a better example would be Captain Malcolm Reynolds (played by Nathan Fillion) in Firefly, who nearly always wore high-waisted trousers which may not have been strictly "Victorian" but were trousers, nevertheless, with an appropriately military influence.

The most distinctive features of Mal's trousers were probably how snugly they fit (Kaylee didn't call him "Captain Tight Pants" for nothing!), and the brown stripes that accented the sides.

That said, Mal's trousers were fairly unique in their construction; they had a sew-on waistband (complete with the "double-top" in the back for his suspenders), which was edge-stitched around its perimeter - another kind of technological/machine-sewn/manufactured-in-a-factory/military design influence (as opposed to finely tailored with hidden hand stitching).

As you can see above, the waistband closed at the center front (as opposed to overlapping a few inches like the Sixth Doctor's, Seventh Doctor's, and Joker's did).

Furthermore, the sewn-on waistband on Mal's trousers was in four pieces instead of the usual two; the front and back waistbands were cut separately and sewn closed at the side seam!

Note the unusual front pocket construction, and that the brown stripes were sewn into the waistband seam.

Mal's trousers had a back buckle, as well as a welt pocket on the back right (but not the back left).

Unfortunately, we never got a good look at the hem on Mal's trousers, since the lower pant legs were always tucked into his boots.
