Tutorial Notes

Although our Victorian trousers pattern contains an abundance of construction options and we walk you through choosing and making them in the following tutorial, please be aware that this is far from a comprehensive treatise on the subject!

Our goal with this Victorian trousers tutorial is primarily to make the garment (and its construction) easily accessible to casual costumers/tailors/seamstresses (as opposed to demonstrating advanced techniques for experienced tailors or those interested in period-specific/period-accurate recreations), and as such, this is intended to be a guide for "home sewers" and casual cosplayers who want to make some snazzy trousers with minimal effort.

In other words, we'll be demonstrating how to make Victorian trousers the "easy" way!

Doubtless some experienced period costumers and bespoke tailors will be aghast (if not downright horrified) at some of the "shortcuts" we take with our trousers (fusible interfacing in place of linen/canvas?!?), but let us again reiterate that this tutorial is basically for those with moderate sewing skills who just want to make a pair of decent trousers as quickly and affordably as possible.

That said, you should know that there are far more advanced trousers-making techniques in practically every stage of the process, so if you enjoy making trousers and/or wish to expand your skills, we definitely advise you to check out our "Recommended Reading List" at the end of this tutorial!

Also note that to cover all the relevant construction options for this tutorial, we had to construct multiple pairs of trousers, and the specific trousers may change from photo to photo (though we've tried to keep this to a minimum).

Lastly, although there are numerous waistband construction possibilities, we'll only be covering the two most common in the main body of our tutorial: the "classic" cut-on waistband, and the "standard" sew-on wraparound waistband. Additional waistband variations will be (briefly) demonstrated at the end of the tutorial, as well as in some of our character-specific trousers tutorials.

Now, let's make some trousers!
